General:
Perennial herb from stout, branched stem-bases; stems erect, 40-70 cm tall, somewhat stiff-hairy below, with white hairs, glandular-hairy above.
Leaves:
Basal leaves heart-kidney-shaped, 3-6 cm wide, palmately 7- to 9-lobed, the lobes shallow, toothed, somewhat whitish-hairy below, usually smooth above, stalked, the stalks long, hairy; stem leaves lacking; stipules membranous, fused to the leaf-stalks.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a narrow, many-flowered cluster; petals purplish, 5, clawed, blades spoon-shaped, equal to or slightly longer than sepals; calyces greenish, strongly glandular-hairy, cylinder bell-shaped, joined to ovary to halfway, the free hypanthium lop-sided, 2-4 mm long on one side, less than half that on other; calyx lobes 5, oblong, erect, about length of hypanthium; stamens 5, slightly longer than calyx lobes.
Fruits:
Capsules, opening along the beaks; seeds dark brown, 0.7 mm long, spiny.
